City & Culture
Bangkok, the capital of the Land of Smiles (Thailand) is a city brimming with vibrancy. Full of spirituality, floating markets, history and more; this city is like no other. The things you experience here have a unique charm to it such that you find yourself devoid of words to express your true feelings. Once you’ve been to Bangkok, you will always carry it within you wherever you go. The experiences you’ve lived here will always be a part of you even if you’re the only one who is cognizant of it. Probably, that’s why it’s often referred to as the City of Angels. A city that works its magic on you without you being aware of it. Here are some of the most wonderful places in Bangkok for an enriching experience.
Wat Pho should be the first in your itinerary while visiting Bangkok. It is famous for the 15 meters tall and 46 meters long statue of Reclining Buddha. The statue is entirely covered in gold leaf and is so stunning to look at that it will leave you gasping for breath.
The story behind 108 bowls of the temple:
When you enter the temple, you will notice some bowls. Now, if you think there are too many to count them, I’ll give you the exact number-108. Yup, there are 108 bowls inside the temple. And now you may ask why so? Why 108? The reason behind this is that Buddhists believe that Buddha became perfect by completing 108 positive actions. You can even buy a few coins from outside the temple to put them in the bowls.
The Grand Palace is located near Wat Pho. The palace is no more a residential place for the royal family. However, it is still used for official state functions. Though the entry inside the palace is barred, but walking around outside the palace complex and open temples is equally thrilling. The intricate architecture of the palace is worth marvelling at.
The National Museum of Thailand is a must visit place if you want to completely immerse yourself in the culture of this beautiful country. Apart focusing on Thai culture, this museum is a treat for music lovers. It also includes a massive collection of musical instruments, recorded music, ornate royal funeral chariots, and impressive wooden carvings.
There are tours available in English language on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30am.
The Jim Thompson House was built by H.W. Thompson, an American entrepreneur who was the founder of Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. He lived in Thailand for 25 years until his mysterious disappearance in 1967.
The house in constructed in traditional Thai style. It comprises of a complex of six houses; all of them built in traditional style. It is beautifully decorated with teak wood and has a garden which complements its beauty.
What is it like to take a tour of the house?
A guided tour of this house includes history of the man who built this house (Jim Thompson), the silk industry, and the reasons and methodology behind the construction of Thai houses in traditional ways.
One undeniable reason to visit the house:
The entry fee of the house goes to underprivileged kids.
Every person who travels to Bangkok for the first time cannot help to be intrigued by the floating markets of Bangkok. These markets offer one of a kind experience especially to the first time visitors. The women cooking and selling delicious treats with irresistible smells on boats will make you feel hungry even if you’re not and will increase your hunger two-fold if you already are.
